Dirt

Drawn to the dirt...

As everything in our life, I feel like riding bikes (of just about every kind) has always been part of our lives. Early on Travis had always had a street bike of some sort, from a Dyna wide glide, to a stretched Texas Chopper with a suction cup fender seat for me, which soon branched into dirt bikes. He did a lot of trail riding with his best friend up in the mountains near our home. Rode a real monster of a bike at first, a Kawasaki KLX650R. But then came to me begging me for a new bike, his reasoning? He claimed the KLX was better suited for military excursions in his opinion... Personally, I think he really just wanted a push button starter, LOL! Knowing I could not convince him otherwise, he ended up buying a new KTM 450MXC which he eventually turned into a 525.

A few years down the line, our son Cole was born. Just a little side note and thanks to an old little league Coach, he no longer really goes by Cole, everyone calls him by his nickname, "Roscoe".

Roscoe was pretty much born into a life of toys. From boats to bikes to all the in between, he seemed to love toys just as much as his dad and I did. When he would cry as a baby Travis found out that if he took him out to the garage, started up his KTM, all Roscoe wanted to do was sit on the tank, grab the throttle and rev the engine. Poof! no more tears! We really got a kick out of that, and ultimately we knew where this was all headed...

It wasn't more than a little over a year before we purchased him an electric mini chopper that sat in the living room until he was old enough to ride on our laps around the neighborhood. But that wasn't gonna cut it and Dad was not stopping there. He was convinced we needed to pull the trigger and buy Roscoe his first real dirt bike. Keep in mind, this kid was barely walking at this time. Well, I lost that argument and soon we were introducing our kid to a brand new Honda 50 on his 2nd birthday. He was riding it with training wheels at 3 and begged us to get rid of them by age 4.

I did have a bike for a brief moment, (Honda 150) but really I left the riding to the boys and their buddies while I stayed back at the weekend warrior travel trailer and made up camp and margaritas most weekends. We spent many a weekends camping and trail riding with friends.

Roscoe went through a few bikes growing up, including a 2 stroke KTM 65, before landing on the Yamaha YZ250F that he has today. Between the 65 and the Yamaha 250 he took a number of years off of riding to play travel baseball, but in the end he has come full circle back to fill his love of riding. Not too long ago he added a Kawasaki 110 to the mix and enjoys racing it out at Sac Race way with his track buddies.

Why we ride...

If you have ever had the chance to find something that you and your entire family can really enjoy and spend time together doing, you probably know how important these hobbies and time spent can be to a family unit. To be able to get away from the stresses of work, everyday life and just unplug from the digital world that we all live in, for our family, this was OUR time. The time we needed to bond and grow, not just as a family, but as our son has become a young adult, we are now friends who share in the same interests, love of the outdoors and values in just living life to the fullest.

I didn't know the day that I met Travis over 25 years ago that I was going to end up a dirt bike riding, boat launching, mountain bike enthusiast, crotch rocket chick and chopper babe with a suction cup seat, to now rock crawling jeep lover. But I will tell you this...at 48 and 52 years old, we both find ourselves enjoying and living our best life ever.

We all still enjoy planning trips together, whether it is boating or watching Roscoe race his Kawi 110 on the track, it doesn't seem that this life of fun in the outdoors as a family will end any time soon.

What's the take away from all of this? I guess you are only as old as you let yourself believe you are.

We are just an adventurous California couple who has always enjoyed living a little bit outside of the box.

From boats, too many cars to count, mountain, dirt and street bikes, to travel trailers and now jeeps. Toys have always been our passion and a little bit of a weakness when it comes to having too much fun.

Our motto, "You only live once" has pretty much become our way of doing life!
